Remote Work: Checklist before starting the workday.

Starting your day with intention and purpose can help you stay focused, energized, and motivated throughout your workday.

As a remote software developer, your morning routine can have a significant impact on your productivity and success. Starting your day with intention and purpose can help you stay focused, energized, and motivated throughout your workday. Here are some things every remote developer should do in the morning before starting work:

  • Set your intentions for the day. Take a few minutes to think about what you want to accomplish during the day ahead. Consider writing down your goals and priorities to help keep you focused and on track.
  • Review your schedule and to-do list. Before diving into work, take a few minutes to review your schedule and to-do list for the day. This can help you identify the most important and urgent tasks and ensure you make the most of your productive hours.
  • Eat a nutritious breakfast. Eating a healthy breakfast can provide you with the energy and focus you need to start your day off right. Consider incorporating foods like whole grains, protein, and fruit to help fuel your body and mind.
  • Take time for yourself. Starting your day with a moment of relaxation or meditation can help you clear your mind and set a positive tone for the day ahead. Consider taking a few minutes to practice deep breathing or mindfulness exercises.

Remember, finding a routine that works for you may take some trial and error, but with patience and persistence, you can create a routine that supports your health, happiness, and productivity as a remote software developer.

What not to do

It's critical to start your day off right and avoid habits that can lead to distraction, stress, and decreased productivity. Here are a few things not to do first thing in the morning as a remote developer:

  • Check email or social media. Checking your email or scrolling through social media first thing in the morning can be tempting, but it can also be a major distraction. Instead, focus on setting your intentions for the day and completing your most important tasks before diving into your inbox or newsfeed. I usually check my email at 11am, after the tasks or part of them are done.
  • Skip breakfast. Skipping breakfast can leave you feeling lethargic, unfocused, and hungry throughout the day. Instead, prioritize eating a nutritious breakfast to fuel your body and mind. In my case, I start working really early, around 6:00 am, but try to have breakfast around 8:00am, I never skip breakfast, and you shouldn't.
  • Dive straight into work. While it may be tempting to dive straight into work first thing in the morning, it's essential to take a few minutes to center yourself and set your intentions for the day. Consider taking a few deep breaths or practicing meditation or having a walk/run in the neighborhood to help calm your mind and focus your energy.
  • Neglect your personal hygiene. While working from home may give you more flexibility in your morning routine, it's important not to neglect your personal hygiene. Taking a shower, brushing your teeth, and getting dressed can help you feel more alert, confident, and ready to tackle the day ahead.

By avoiding these habits and prioritizing healthy, productive habits, you can start your day off on the right foot and set yourself up for a successful day of remote work. Remember, finding a routine that works for you may take some trial and error, but with patience and persistence, you can create a routine that supports your health, happiness, and productivity as a remote software developer.
